PITTSBURGH, March 25, 2022 – A University of Maryland professor will speak at La Roche University about disinformation, misinformation and conspiracy theories in recent media.
Dr. Jennifer Golbeck’s presentation, “Media Manipulation: Exploration of Mis and Disinformation,” will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 31 in the Ryan Room of the Zappala Campus Center at La Roche’s campus in McCandless Township.
The talk will explore a wide range of misinformation and disinformation around the 2020 U.S. presidential election, the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the COVID-19 vaccine, and policies and treatments related to COVID-19. Dr. Golbeck also will examine paths forward for measuring, understanding and intervening in U.S. domestic online extremism.
Cristina Bahm, Ph. D., assistant professor of information technology, said, “We wanted to bring in an expert to discuss social media and mis and dis information. These topics are extremely important for everyone to understand because they affect our daily lives.”
Dr. Golbeck completed her Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park. She researches artificial intelligence, social media, privacy and trust on the web.
