La Roche College to Celebrate International Education Week

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 7, 2016 – From Nov. 14-18, students, staff and faculty at La Roche University will be participating in International Education Week, and the community is invited to take part in the events.

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and U.S. Department of Education, developed as an opportunity to celebrate the importance of international education and student exchange worldwide.

“International Education Week gives us the opportunity to create a full calendar of international events that unifies our international and domestic students,” said Study Abroad Coordinator Nicole Gable. “It allows our international students to share their cultures—their food, their art, their music—with others to unite the campus in a unique way.”

During the week, La Roche will offer internationally focused programs and events, along with opportunities for the college community to explore various cultures. For example, each day, students will receive a Test Your Global IQ email that features quizzes on global issues, geography and other topics.

“While La Roche is a global community year-round—nearly 20 percent of our student population is international—we really intensify our efforts during this week,” said Fr. Tom Schaefer, Ph.D., associate vice president for academic affairs. “For example, these daily quizzes enable students to rate themselves in terms of understanding the governments, geography, culture and music of different countries; to see where they stand as global citizens.”

A photo contest featuring students’ travel photos will be displayed in the Cantellops Art Gallery, and visitors are encouraged to cast their votes for the best photo. The display, which is open to the public, will run through Nov. 18.

Each day, international coffees from around the world will be highlighted in the Providence World Café in the Wright Library.
