Sam Hazo to Present Signature Event as La Roche College’s Poet-in-Residence

PITTSBURGH, March. 19, 2018 – The La Roche University Literary Society and the Sisters of Divine Providence will host an evening with poet Sam Hazo on Thursday, April 12.

The event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kearns Spirituality Center on the Sisters of Divine Providence property adjacent to the La Roche campus. The renowned author will give his final reading as La Roche’s Poet-in-Residence and share work from yesterday and today.

Dr. Hazo’s residency at La Roche began in March 2017 when he conducted “The Spoken Page,” an eight-week noncredit course exploring the spoken act of poetry. Since then he has headlined La Roche Literary Society events, taught a credit-bearing Select Literature course for students, guest-lectured in various classes throughout the University, and dedicated “The Poet’s Garden” outside of Magdalen Chapel.

“The classes and events offered through Sam’s residency invited us to nourish our souls –to engage with words, ideas and feelings for the pure joy of it,” Janine Bayer, chair of the La Roche English Department, said. “Like all great art, poetry has the power to transform us. Sam’s presence on campus has brought students and community members together to celebrate the importance of poetry in our lives; it has been a beautiful gift to us.”

Registration for the event is $25, and seating is limited. Reservations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Heavy hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served, and Dr. Hazo’s books will be available for purchase and signing. To register visit laroche.edu/hazo.

Considered one of the most enduring poets of our time, Dr. Hazo is the author of poetry, fiction, essays, various works of translation and four plays. The founder and director of the International Poetry Forum and McAnulty Distinguished Professor of English Emeritus of Duquesne University, he served as Pennsylvania’s first state poet from 1993 to 2003.
