La Roche College Wins Education Award from the Union of African Communities

PITTSBURGH, Sept. 14, 2017 – The Union of African Communities in Southwestern Pennsylvania (UACSWPA) recently selected La Roche University to receive the Education Award at the 2017 African Diversity Awards gala.

The organization chose La Roche as the 2017 recipient for its efforts to value diversity, and for working to improve and strengthen academic excellence for immigrants and native-born residents alike.

UACSWPA President Benedict Killang stated, “La Roche University’s great achievements and success have become a model and inspiration to our community members. We celebrate and honor the University’s efforts in contributions to diversity and inclusion in the Greater Pittsburgh area and Allegheny County.”

The African Diversity Awards Gala was held at the Rivers Casino on Friday, Sept. 1. Mayor of Pittsburgh Bill Peduto was in attendance, along with representatives from colleges, universities, businesses and organizations that have excelled in promoting equality and diversity across the region. Proceeds from the event were donated toward UACSWPA education funds, including the Nelson Mandela student scholarship fund benefiting African students, minority families, after-school STEM programs and other initiatives within the community and beyond.
