Federal Loan Limits

Dependent Students

Freshman: 0-29 completed credits

  • Maximum Subsidized Amount: $3,500
  • Additional Unsubsidized Amount: $2,000

Sophomore: 3-29 completed credits

  • Maximum Subsidized Amount: $4,500
  • Additional Unsubsidized Amount: $2,000

Junior or Senior: 60 or more completed credits

  • Maximum Subsidized Amount: $5,500
  • Additional Unsubsidized Amount: $2,000

Independent Students

Freshman: 0-29 completed credits

  • Maximum Subsidized Amount: $3,500
  • Additional Unsubsidized Amount: $6,000

Sophomore: 3-29 completed credits

  • Maximum Subsidized Amount: $4,500
  • Additional Unsubsidized Amount: $6,000

Junior or Senior: 60 or more completed credits

  • Maximum Subsidized Amount: $5,500
  • Additional Unsubsidized Amount: $7,000

Graduate Loan Limits

  • Maximum Unsubsidized Amount: $20,500

Aggregate Student Loan Limits

Undergraduate dependent students
$31,000; no more than $23,000 can be subsidized.

Undergraduate independent students
$57,500; no more than $23,000 can be subsidized.

Graduate students
$138,000; no more than $65,000 can be subsidized.

Actual Loan Amounts

The actual loan funds that get credited to the student’s account are the base amount of the loan minus the origination fees charged by the Department of Education. The Department charges an origination fee prior to sending the loan funds to the school. This fee is typically between one to five percent of the total amount of the loan.
