La Roche Scholarships

LRU’s generous scholarships can help to keep your educational costs manageable by lowering the cost of tuition.

Merit Scholarships

Merit scholarships are awarded to domestic full-time freshmen. They do not require a separate application and are awarded at the time of admission. These scholarships are generally renewable each semester and are based by the GPA ranges listed below:

Freshmen

  • 3.7 or higher: up-to $21,000
  • 2.9 – 3.69: up-to $19,500
  • 2.3 – 2.89: up-to $17,500
  • 2.0 – 2.29: needs a test score
Transfer
  • 3.75 – 4.0: up-to $19,000
  • 3.5 – 3.74: up-to $18,000
  • 3.0 – 3.49: up-to $17,000
  • 2.5 – 2.99: up-to $16,000
  • 2.0 – 2.49: up-to $15,000

Resident Award: up-to $2,000

Institutional Scholarships

Legacy Award
For the son, daughter, stepchild, niece, nephew or grandchild of a La Roche alumnus: $1,000

Catholic High School Scholarship
For graduating from a Catholic high school: $3,000

Resident Award
$2,000

Pittsburgh Promise Preferred Partner Award
For students graduating from a Promise-eligible high school: $2,500

Sibling Award
Must have a sibling or step-sibling currently attending La Roche: $1,000

Resident Assistant (RA) Scholarships
Room and board scholarships are awarded to students who are selected to be resident assistants in any one of the campus residence halls.

Alumni Referral Award
This award creates an opportunity for University alumni to provide a financial reward to prospective college students that apply to La Roche. Upon acceptance to the University, a $1,000 award will be included in their financial aid package to help make their La Roche education more affordable.

Awards will be renewable each year, up to four years, provided the student remains continuously enrolled at the University. Eligible students will only be granted one Alumni Referral Award.

Please note that nominations are only accepted for students who have not previously applied to La Roche per our eligibility requirements.

If you are not sure if the student has already applied, please contact Hope Schiffgens, executive director for enrollment at hope.schiffgens@laroche.edu for verification prior to submitting your nomination.

Referrals may be made for first-time, undergraduate freshmen in high school; or a transfer student, either domestic or international.

The referred student must:

  • Maintain full-time enrollment status
  • Remain in a degree-seeking program
  • Abide by the regulations governing college life
  • Make Satisfactory Academic Progress in order to renew their scholarship for each year they are a student at La Roche

La Roche employees in Enrollment and Athletics departments, who also are graduates of the University, are not eligible to submit a referral.

Annual & Endowed Scholarships

Scholarships are available to students as a result of the generosity of our donors who believe in the value of a La Roche University education. If you have questions about applying to an annual or endowed scholarship, please email scholarships@laroche.edu.

List of Scholarships

Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship 
Established by the Alumni Association Board as a result of the numerous donations received from alumni for this purpose. Award is available to a new or returning student who is a child (natural born and adopted) stepchild, grandchild, niece or nephew of an alumnus of La Roche University, including the Sisters of Divine Providence. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Robert B. Anticole Endowed Memorial Scholarship 
Established by family in memory of Robert B. Anticole who believed in the importance of higher education. Award is available to a full-time junior or senior for the next academic year majoring in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems or Information Technology. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Minimum 3.65 GPA required. Non-renewable.

Rebecca A. Bartoldi Memorial Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Rebecca Bartoldi who pioneered the Occupational Therapy program at La Roche University and had a passion for the field of health sciences. Award is available to a full-time student in a health-related major and in their last year of study at La Roche before transitioning to a cooperative program or in their final year before graduating from La Roche. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Walter and Dolores Bold Memorial Scholarship
Established by the Estate of Dolores Bold in memory of Walter and Dolores Bold who were well known for their generous support of education and the arts in the Pittsburgh area. Award is available to students from any major who will be full-time sophomores, juniors and seniors for the next academic. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Dr. Edward and Donna Brett Scholarship
Established by Dr. Edward & Donna Brett to assist under-represented students with academic promise and a commitment to succeed. Award is available to an incoming freshman or current undergraduate student in any major. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Campana Modern Language Scholarship
Established by the late Dr. Louis F. Campana in memory of Sister Mathia Pfeil and Sister Godfreda Pfeil to encourage the study of modern languages. Award is available to a full-time student who has at least one year of language study at La Roche University, is currently enrolled in a modern language course and plans to use modern language in their career. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Carol ’81 & Hugo Churchill Endowed Scholarship
Established by family in memory of Carol Churchill ’81. Award is available to an undergraduate student who will be a junior or senior in the next academic year, who is an adult learner (age 24 or older) and has an interest in women’s issues, rights or equality. Applicant must have 60 credits with 30 of those obtained at La Roche University. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Sister Mary Joan Coultas and Sister Mary Thomas Kadyszewski Endowed Scholarship
Established by distinguished alumnus and former trustee, Mike Mlinac ’77, to show his heartfelt appreciation and respect for both Sisters who were his most influential instructors, mentors and role models during his education at La Roche University. Award is available to a student majoring in either math, business administration or accounting. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

The Honorable William J. Coyne Memorial Scholarship
Established in memory of Congressman William J. Coyne who represented Pittsburgh with distinction in the United States House of Representatives from 1982 to 2003. His successful career in public service, along with his previous employment as a corporate accountant, formed the basis of his support for higher education and opportunities for non-traditional students. Award is available to any student who is either a first-generation student, or has an interest in international culture, heritage, society and customs, or is a veteran of any of the Armed Services of the U.S., or whose parents/legal guardians (living or deceased) are members or veterans of the Armed Services of the U.S. or are active or retired members of a governmental or law enforcement body, or is preparing for a career in public service. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Divine Providence Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Sisters of Divine Providence to help under-represented students continue their education. Award is available to full-time, under-represented students who have at least 24 credits at La Roche University and an interest in women's issues, rights or equality. Minimum 2.5 GPA required. Renewable award.

William Sherman Feeny Endowed Scholarship
Established in memory of William Sherman Feeny by his sister, Anne Louise Feeny. Award is available to a student who will be a senior the next academic year from any major with academic motivation. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Dr. MariJean Ferguson Sociology Scholarship
Established by family in memory of Dr. MariJean Ferguson who was a former faculty member and Chair of the Sociology Department. Award is available to an adult learner (age 24 or older) who is either beginning higher education or returning to higher education, who is pursuing a degree in sociology and has an interest in women’s issues, rights or equality. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Founders Scholarship
Established by the Sisters of Divine Providence to assist students from any major who have academic merit and significant need. Awards are for full tuition, less financial aid received. Recipients are responsible for all other educational costs. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Christina Fragasso Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established by former trustee Robert Fragasso in memory of his parents, Christina and Alfonso Fragasso, whose hard work and belief in the value of education were instrumental in his success as an entrepreneur and investment advisor. Award is available to any student from any major with great financial need and great potential to succeed. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Dr. A. Kenneth and Doris B. Hesselberg Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Estate of Dr. A. Kenneth Hesselberg in memory of Dr. A. Kenneth & Doris Hesselberg. Award is available to full-time undergraduate students who have outstanding academic merit and are U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Minimum 3.5 GPA required. Renewable award.

Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Scholarship
Established by the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church. Award is available to a current full-time undergraduate student or incoming freshman who has an interest in international culture, society, language and customs. Incoming freshmen must have a minimum 3.5 GPA and full-time undergraduates must have a minimum 3.0 GPA. Non-renewable award.

Joseph E. Homer Memorial Nurse Anesthetist Endowed Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Joseph E. Homer ’98 who was a second-year nurse anesthetist student at La Roche University. Award is available to a nurse anesthetist student who will be a second-year student at the time of the award. Minimum 3.5 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

International Facility Management Association Endowed Scholarship
Established in 2002 by the Pittsburgh Chapter of the International Facility Management Association. The award is available to a full-time undergraduate in the facilities management field (i.e., Interior Design) at La Roche University and has completed at least one year in that program. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the United States. Renewable award.

Kathryn A. Jolley ’81 and Gregory P. Madej Endowed Scholarship
Established by distinguished alumna, former trustee and former Chair of the Board of Trustees, Kathryn A. Jolley ’81, and her husband Gregory P. Madej. Award is available to an undergraduate student with financial need, majoring in interior design and has completed the conclusive design review. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Sister Mary Thomas Kadyszewski Distinguished Service Scholarship
Established in memory of Sister Mary Thomas Kadyszewski and in tribute to her 22 years of service as a faculty member at La Roche University. Award is available to an incoming freshman or transfer student who demonstrates school, church and community service activities. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Coach Scott Lang Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established by family and friends in memory of Coach Lang and his 14 years as Head Coach of Men’s Basketball at La Roche University. Award is available to a full-time student from any of the following majors: child & family studies, criminal justice, religious studies, elementary education and English studies. Minimum 2.75 GPA required. Renewable award.

George O. Lauth Memorial Scholarship
Established by George and Sandra Lauth Mervosh ’91 SPHR in memory of her father, George A. Lauth, who believed strongly in the benefits of higher education. Award is available to a full-time incoming freshman with academic merit and an interest in women’s issues, rights or equality. Minimum 3.25 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Angela J. Longo '89 Endowed Scholarship
Established by distinguished alumna and former trustee Angela J. Longo '89 to help students achieve their higher education. Award is available to any student from any major who is beginning or returning to complete their higher education as an adult learner (age 24 or older). Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Stanley J. Michalek Memorial Scholarship
Established by family in memory of Stanley Michalek. Award is available to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in management or accounting with 90 or more credits. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Charles and Ruth Mlinac Endowed Scholarship
Established by alumnus Michael Mlinac ’77 in memory of his parents, Charles and Ruth Mlinac, who encouraged and supported his education providing him an opportunity to obtain a college degree. Neither had the opportunity to attend college, but they took pride in his success and were supporters of La Roche. Award is available to a student majoring in either mathematics, business administration or accounting. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Pacem In Terris Scholarship
Established to assist full-time, undergraduate students who have had personal experience with conflict, post-conflict or developing nations. Applicants must have complied with all United States immigration regulations, completed all secondary studies and all required government examinations for entrance into a university. Applicants must not have the personal finances or access to financial resources sufficient to afford a college education. Applicants must participate in community service activities while enrolled at La Roche. Applicants must commit to return to homeland at some time after graduation and work to improve conditions there. Minimum 2.5 GPA required. Renewable award.

Kris Rosenberg Memorial Scholarship
Established by family in memory of Kris Rosenberg who was a former adjunct faculty member in the Department of Psychology. Award is available to adult learners (age 24 or older) who are beginning their higher education and will maintain at least nine credits each semester, or who are returning to higher education after an absence, have at least 15 credits and will maintain a schedule of at least nine credits each semester. Minimum 3.25 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Judge Timothy F. & Mrs. Rhea F. Ryan Memorial Scholarship
Established by the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas C. Ryan in memory of his parents, The Honorable Timothy F. & Rhea Ryan. Award is available to a full-time undergraduate student majoring in administration & management, has completed 30 or more credits at La Roche University and demonstrates community involvement. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Daniel W. Schneider Memorial Scholarship I
Established by family and friends in memory of Daniel W. Schneider. Award is available to a junior from any major who demonstrates curricular and extracurricular involvement. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Daniel W. Schneider Memorial Scholarship II
Established by family and friends in memory of Daniel W. Schneider. Award is available to a student from any major who is a sportsman or sportswoman (enjoys hunting, fishing, etc.,) and is associated with or has close contact with a building trades union. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

The John Sorbara Memorial Scholarship
Established by family in memory of John Sorbara who was a La Roche University student and a member of the baseball team. Award is available to a full-time undergraduate student who has completed at least 30 credits at La Roche University and is majoring in exercise and sports science, athletic training or health sciences. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Tem Tipton Memorial Endowed Scholarship
Established by family in memory of Tem Tipton as a tribute to her professional achievements as a reference librarian and teacher and in honor of her community service. Award is available to a full-time undergraduate student who has completed their freshman year, is majoring in either education or English and has current or past community service activities. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.

Zaffuto Family Endowed Scholarship
Established by distinguished alumnus George T. Zaffuto ’85 in memory of his parents Gerlando “George” and Ignatias “Betty” Zaffuto. Award is available to a graduate student in the Human Resources Management program. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Non-renewable award.

Frank and Josephine Zappala Endowed Scholarship
Established by the Estate of Josephine Zappala in memory of Frank and Josephine Zappala who were advocates of Catholic higher education and whose family members continue their tradition of generosity to and involvement with La Roche University. Awards are available to full-time undergraduate students from any major who can demonstrate participation in community service and have an interest in international culture, society, language and customs. Minimum 3.0 GPA required. Renewable award.
