Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I enroll in the Entry Level Master of Science in Nursing (ELMSN) rather than an Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) degree program?
As an ELMSN-qualified nurse, you’re entering the nursing profession with graduate-level knowledge and skills and can elevate your earning potential and stand out to future employers on day one.
Whereas, an ABSN-qualified nurse would typically have to go back to school for another 15 months, just to get on the same footing as the ELMSN grad.
Lastly, an ABSN applicant might not be eligible for financial aid depending on how much they used for their previous degree, while an ELMSN applicant is automatically eligible.
Can I work while I’m in school?
Between a full-time course load and clinical assignments, students are encouraged not to work outside of the program while attending the ELMSN program.
Is there student housing?
Peters Hall, a residence building at La Roche, offers dedicated housing for ELMSN students. Suites house two students per room and feature:
- A living room
- A private bathroom
- Two to three bedrooms
- A kitchenette
- A compact refrigerator/freezer and microwave
Internet, cable and laundry are covered in your room and board as a resident student.

Are there work-study opportunities? No, work-study opportunities or graduate assistantships are not available for ELMSN students.
What other programs are available after I complete my ELMSN degree? You will have the academic foundation necessary to pursue APRN specialty certification or doctoral-level study after graduation. At La Roche we offer you the opportunity to return after your MSN and complete certification coursework for the following specialties: Clinical Nurse Leader, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education.
Where can I go with this degree? As an ELMSN graduate from La Roche you’ll have the skills and qualifications necessary to pursue bedside nursing roles in hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation centers, long-term care facilities, schools and many other care settings.
Since I don’t have any nursing in my previous work experience, will I be able to work as an RN upon graduation?Graduates must sit for the Pennsylvania State Board of Nursing licensure exam. Upon successful completion of the exam you will receive your license to practice as a registered nurse.
In addition to our 100 percent degree completion rate, 100 percent of respondents to our MSN alumni surveys over the past three years report that they were working in a degree-related job within six months of graduation. That’s because we’re connected to employers throughout the region, thanks to faculty who are active, respected practitioners and a network of affiliated health care organizations we’ve built over the years.
As a La Roche graduate, you will have access to the opportunities you need to build a lifelong career in nursing—and the skills you need to make a difference in the lives of patients.
